Probably the most well‑known British hymnwriter is responsible for this stirring hymn in 1742. Charles Wesley is still a well‑known name nearly 300 years later. These are scriptures which are believed to have inspired Wesley. Phil.4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. Psalm 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. Rev.3:2‑3 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 1 Pet.5:6‑11 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Psa.62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. 2 Tim.2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Matt.16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 1 Pet.4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. Luke 22:46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. Luke 18:1 He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. Col.4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving. Matt.26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. |
